McCook, NE - Cory Degnan, a dedicated teacher from McCook, Nebraska, has been selected for two distinct and prestigious programs focused on scientific research and education. These opportunities will allow Degnan to expand his geological and ecological knowledge and bring new, hands-on learning experiences back to his students.
In late June, Degnan was awarded a scholarship from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) to participate in a two-and-a-half-week geology field school. The program provided an immersive study of the geology of both Nebraska and Wyoming, offering a rare chance to learn in the field.
Following this, Degnan was chosen as one of only nine teachers nationwide to receive funding from Earthwatch, a global nonprofit that connects people with scientists to conduct environmental research. This scholarship will funded him travel to Acadia National Park and the Schoodic Institute in Maine in August. There, he will work directly with scientists to collect and analyze data. The program culminates in a collaborative effort to develop new, engaging lesson plans for teachers across the country, inspired by the fieldwork.
"I am incredibly grateful for these opportunities," Degnan said. "Getting to do real scientific work and then translate that into lessons for my students is a dream come true. I can’t wait to share what I’ve learned about both the geology of our region and the ecology of Acadia with students and teachers."
Degnan's participation in these programs highlights his commitment to continuous learning and bringing authentic, real-world science to his classroom.
