As part of the 5th grade Social Studies class at Central Elementary School, students participate in a Digital Citizenship program called Civic Bytes. The program is co-taught by Miss Francescato and Mrs. Williams and is designed to promote awareness and civic leadership in the Digital Age.
Throughout the year, students are encouraged to apply traditional citizenship skills to online behavior and to inspire their peers to use technology for good. The highlight of the program is creating a poster that is entered into the Nebraska Digital Citizenship Poster Contest, sponsored by the statewide Educational Service Unit (ESU) system.
This spring, students in grades K-12 submitted entries online and were judged in four grade categories. Of the 237 contest entries, 36 medal and certificate winning projects were selected and announced in April. Two of our 5th graders were chosen as Nebraska Honorable Mention recipients: Anson Schilling and Elijah Scherbarth.
Prior to receiving the contest results, the 5th graders lobbied to conduct their own contest and as a result voted in the inaugural "Central Choice Awards". The winners of this local award include Brantley Peterson (1st), Lincoln Brown (2nd), Cooper Davidson (3rd) Ashton Koeppe (Hon Mention), and Lynkyn Hagan (Hon Mention).
These seven young men, accompanied by their parents and teachers, attended the Board Meeting on May 11. Each shared their work with the audience and explained what the project meant to them. Their presentation was outstanding!
Congratulations to our winners! We are very proud of you!
