Author, Bruce Arant, leading an illustration workshop at McCook Elementary on March 1, 2024.

Students at McCook Elementary enjoyed a visit from Nebraska author, Bruce Arant, in celebration of Nebraska's 157th birthday on March 1, 2024. Mr. Arant is the author/illustrator of "Simpson's Sheep Won't Go To Sleep" (2013) and "Simpson's Sheep Just Want To Sleep" (2017).

The K-3 gym was a sea of red as students arrived to the morning assembly dressed in red and everything Husker. Mrs. Donelan led the students in a sing-along that included "Beautiful Nebraska" and "Happy Birthday (Nebraska)". The celebration continued as Advanced Drama students from the high school performed, "King Bidgood's in the Bathtub" by Audrey Wood and illustrated by Don Wood. 1st graders, Clifford Uerling and Aric Sharp presented Mr. Arant with a thank you gift that included local favorites. Throughout the day, Kindergarten through 3rd grade classes attended Picture Book Illustrating Workshops. Mr. Arant also visited Central Elementary to lead a Writer's Workshop with our 4th and 5th graders.

McCook Public Schools is grateful to Mrs. Linda Wood and Gumdrop Books for sponsoring and organizing Mr. Arant's visit. What an exciting way to celebrate the birthday of our home state, Nebraska!
