Course Title:                Civics                                      Recommended for:  Grade 9

Course Length:           Semester

This course is designed to meet the Nebraska State Standards in Social Science 12.3.1 through 12.2.13.  This course is a survey of the national, state, and local governments.  The students will experience a variety to activities to stimulate and interest them in understanding their rights and responsibilities as citizens.  Daily work, projects, exams, and participation make up the assessment in this course.

This course is designed to meet Nebraska State Standards in Social Science 12.4.1 through 12.4.7.  This course studies the physical as well as the cultural geography of the world.  Climates, landforms, population, regions, weather, and other topics will be the focus of this class.  Students will also be able to apply geography to interpret the past, understand the present, and plan for the future.  Daily work, projects, exams, and participation make up the assessments in this course.

This course is a general survey of world events from the Crusades to the Post-Cold War age.  The students will be required to conduct research and develop papers and projects on assigned topics.  Students will be actively involved in class discussions and presentations.  All students are required to use technology to enhance the learning environment.  Dailey work, projects, exams, and participation make up the assessments in this course.  Nebraska State Standards for Social Science 12.2.1 through 12.2.11 are covered in this course.

This course is an in-depth study in world cultures.  Writing and research skills are necessity for success in this course.  The student must be able to discuss and defend stances on the causes and effects of various historical, social, economic, and cultural events.  Various projects and papers will make up the majority of assessments in this course.  The course will cover areas including but not limited to: the crusades, world religions, regions of the world, the renaissance, reformation, exploration, industrialization, and the twentieth century.  Nebraska State Standards for Social Science 12.2.1 through 12.2.11 are covered in this course.

American History is a junior-level two-semester course.  Students will explore such areas as the early colonial period, the American Revolution, the Constitution era, the Antebellum Period, the Civil War, the Populist and Progressive era, and the changing roles of American society in the twentieth century.  The student will be required to be actively involved in class discussions, conduct research on assigned topics using various types of resources and media, and work extensively with primary source materials.

Honors American History is a junior level two-semester course.  This course is an option to the regular American History course.  Students will explore such areas as the early colonial period, the American Revolution, the Constitution era, the Antebellum Period, the Civil War, the Populist and Progressive era, and the changing roles of American society in the twentieth century.  The student will be expected to investigate topics, produce student-generated projects, and give presentations to the class.  The student will need to possess a strong curiosity about American history beyond a general interest, possess strong research and writing skills, be able to work independently, and be able to interpret primary source documents. All required written assignments and projects will be computer-generated.  Students will also be required to submit a written semester project.

This course is an in-depth study in American government and law.  Writing and research skills are a necessity for success in this course.  The student must be able to discuss and defend stances on the causes and effects of various historical, social, economic, and cultural events.  Various projects and papers will make up the majority of the assessments in the course.  This course will cover areas including, but not limited to,: the United States Constitution, “street law”, Nebraska law, local ordinances, and the Nebraska Corrections Department.  The consequences of failing to conduct one’s life in a lawful manner will be stressed.

The purpose of this class is to prepare the college-bound student for college level business and general studies classes, as well as develop the student’s understanding of the different economic systems in the world.  Economics will cover the numerous aspects of macro and micro economics in the global economy.  A unique project that all students will accomplish before the end of the 1st semester will be the College Search Project.  This project requires the students to visit colleges, apply for admissions and scholarships, as well as figure the cost of a college education.
