The student will study the development of the child from the time of conception until birth. Included will be the interaction of the emotional, physical, mental, and social needs of the child for the prevention of illness and accident, and for enabling the child to achieve his/her fullest developmental potential. The course continues by studying the specific needs of children from birth to age 13 as related to diet, clothing, housing, and developmental patterns and needs.

This course looks at how the American family functions economically, socially, and emotionally. Through simulation and problem solving, students are provided with real-life situations so they may learn necessary coping skills. Experiences will be provided in communication, value clarification, interpersonal relationships, married life, parenting, careers, and money management. This is a community-based class, therefore the students will be utilizing and going out into the community for many of their classroom projects.
